The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper – Phaedra Patrick

In this poignant and sparkling debut, a lovable widower embarks on a life-changing adventure

Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m., just as he did when his wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same grey slacks and mustard sweater vest, waters his fern, Frederica, and heads out to his garden.

But on the one-year anniversary of Miriam’s death, something changes. Sorting through Miriam’s possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he’s never seen before. What follows is a surprising and unforgettable odyssey that takes Arthur from London to Paris and as far as India in an epic quest to find out the truth about his wife’s secret life before they met–a journey that leads him to find hope, healing and self-discovery in the most unexpected places.

Featuring an unforgettable cast of characters with big hearts and irresistible flaws, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper is a curiously charming debut and a joyous celebration of life’s infinite possibilities.

Arthur Pepper is a beautiful soul who at the age of 69 and a year consumed with grieving the loss of his wife, whom he adored for the last 40 years, has lost his path in life. Patrick’s writing beautifully conveyed how a Arthur deals with the loss of a loved one and how he tries to desperately cling to the hope of routine because that is all he knows. Arthur has to learn to live again.

I feel it has only taken me a matter of hours to sail through this heartwarming story

This story that made me feel nostalgic about my grandparents and how they lived their lives, growing old together and being comfortable in each others company, it is a story of old and times gone by and how older people live by routine and become set within their ways. Routine plays a huge part of our everyday lives and for that to suddenly end after 40 years of marriage it is inevitable it will shatter to the core. This is exactly how Arthur Pepper felt and this I completely understand.

It takes Arthur a full year of his stead fast routine before he decides to clear out Miriam’s clothes and belongings, he happens, by chance, to come across a vintage gold charm bracelet tucked away in a heart shaped box clasped with a heart shaped lock and this is where the journey to his new life begins.

This story is about living your life and appreciating what you have. Arthur pushes himself completely out of his comfort zone embarking on a journey of self discovery as he ventures along on the premise of learning the history behind each of the charms on the bracelet. He learns not only about his wife’s life before him but a lot about himself and how he is as a person, meeting delightful characters along the way, reuniting his love with his children and shedding his clothing to save the day! This, we know, is no easy task.

Patrick’s writing is colourful and charming drawing you in and warming your heart, it is a tale of friendship, lifetimes and new beginnings and a very loving man, Arthur Pepper, who needs to find his own place in the world again. A beautiful and well written debut.

The underlying lesson is a strong one of realising what you are worth and how good you are. Believing in yourself and not being afraid to take that chance. I do believe, Arthur Pepper, is an inspiration to all.

    Hi Claire
Thanks for your lovely review. I'm happy that you enjoyed the book. Do you write too? You have a lovely style. I read the other book reviews on your blog and have had The Dress Shop of Dreams on my list for a while. I will be sure to read it now. Also good to see you like The Red Notebook, one of my favourites of last year. I really love the author's other book, The President's Hat also.

    Thanks again x
